These nine short essays offer reflections on virtue and vice in the novels of Jane Austen.

The Virtuous Jane Austen Short Reflections on Character eBook Rhonda Ortiz

Rhonda Ortiz explains Jane Austen in a novel and relevant manner without compromising Austen's literary genius. The short essays are divided by themes, such as jealousy or good with kids, and Ortiz compares and contrasts the characters in Austen's novels to Austen herself. The reflections are insightful and, at times, subtle, always leaving the reader with food for thought.

Even the reader who does not consider him/herself a Janeite will gain knowledge not only of Jane Austen, but of oneself, as well.

The only drawback to this beautiful treatise on Austen is its length. It could be much longer and perhaps delve even more fully into the virtuous life of Jane Austen.

How refreshing to read something so unpretentious without superficiality!

The Virtuous Jane Austen Short Reflections on Character eBook Rhonda Ortiz Reviews

Reading this book has been like being with the best company, "clever well informed people, who have a great deal of conversation" (Persuasion). What could be intellectually better than an engaging discussion of Jane Austen Characters that incorporates virtue? For me, not much!
I was drawn to this book as Jane Austen fan but finished it a Rhonda Ortiz fan!! She deftly weaves Austen's character with the virtuous character we should all be striving to achieve in ourselves. Worth much more than .99!! This eBook is not only a great companion for Lent but for any time of the year ! NOW I feel a binge watch of Jane Austen movies coming on....
As an ardent Jane Austen fan, I was delighted to get a review copy of this ebook. It's a gem. Ortiz has done a terrific job of distilling Austen's characters down to their essence, pointing out what today's readers can learn from their flaws, virtues, and quirks. The chapters are short and pithy, but full of depth ... in other words, perfect for the modern woman who has little time to read (sob), but who still wants to read something that makes her think. This was a treat from start to finish.
What a charming little book! I've seen Austen often discussed as a writer of manners, but when seen as a writer illuminating virtue, Austen's work takes on greater life, depth, and import. Well done!
It is so refreshing to find reflections on virtue in character. So often we read for the simple pleasure of reading and miss the opportunity to reflect and ask ourselves what is it that makes that character so appealing or offensive to me...what characteristics of this persons behavior, or better yet which virtue(s), do I want to try to adapt in my own life? Thank you, Mrs. Ortiz, for sharing your OWN talent for writing, reflections on virtue, and natural passion for Jane Austen with us!
I enjoyed this brief but thought-provoking series of reflections. Ms. Ortiz writes her insights with a clear and winsome voice. If you want to wade into the deeper meaning of Austen’s works, these essays will be quite helpful.
I liked these brief meditations on the virtues and/or vices practiced and displayed by Jane Austen's characters. Familiar as I am with the novels and the film adaptations of the novels, I knew what the author was describing, however; for each meditation I wanted more depth, more details. A reader less familiar with Austen's works and adaptations might not comprehend Ortiz's brief comments. On a scale of 5.0, I would rank this work a 3.5. What's there is good; I just wanted more.
